Our story began in 2013 as a vision to transform the experience of hospital care for babies, families and healthcare professionals; to expand the scope of care to embrace our shared humanity and heal the hurt that often goes unnoticed in the fast-paced, technologically oriented business of healthcare.

Kung Fu Panda, Tea Wisdom and the Holidays

Website Editor • Dec 21, 2020

I love animated movies; I love how they disarm you and then surprise you with deep insight and wisdom.

I was watching Kung Fu Panda 3 this past weekend.  It's the 3rd installment following the life of Po, a lovable panda who becomes the dragon warrior and saves the land.  His spiritual mentor is the late Master Oogway, an ancient tortoise venerated for his wisdom, knowledge, and experience; he is the creator of kung fu and the dragon warrior legend.

Master Oogway instructs Po: "You will never fulfil your destiny until you let go of the illusion of control".

🤯

Po must let go of all the things he thinks define him as the dragon warrior and rediscover who he truly is.

Although his journey of self-discovery isn't easy, Po has many mentors along the way to support him, challenge him and love him.

Master Shifu (played by Dustin Hoffman) offers words of encouragement and motivation to Po:

I can so relate to Po's plight.  I mean, once he became the dragon warrior, life was pretty darn good for him and his companions. They knew exactly what they were doing defending the valley and "running through town high-fiving bunnies".

Although I've never high-fived a bunny, I thought I was pretty set once I became an NNP and had my steady gig at the BWH NICU.  But like Po, even though I knew what I knew, it wasn't enough.

If I stayed doing what I knew I could do, I never would have become the me I am today AND, the me I am today isn't the me I choose to be tomorrow.

I think we all journey to discover our truest self, the highest expression of who we may become.  However, we can often be seduced by the illusion of control.

To me, the illusion of control has been a cage of deception that has kept me preoccupied by my past while constantly fretting about the future.

In this state of perceived control, I have been blind to the present.  This temporary 'visual impairment' has kept me from discovering the depths of my abundance, my wisdom and my potentiality.

How has control helped you?  How has it hindered you?  What would happen if you were to let go?

Trust me, I know this is no easy feat, but the more I have let go, the more I continue to receive.

My recent tea wisdom kind of sums up what I am trying to share with you.

“The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn.”  ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

The mighty oak sleeps inside the acorn just like the bluebird waits inside his egg and the dormant tulip hibernates inside her bulb.

You, me, we are all full of ever expanding, enriching life; full of abundant joy, wisdom and love that is constantly renewing itself, expanding and evolving.

The blooms on my baby rose bush were absolutely stunning when we first planted them, but one year later the bush grew bigger and yielded even more roses. By the third season, the bush was so lush, it gave me more blooms than I knew what to do with - so I began sharing them.

That's YOU!  With each passing year, your experiences, your environments, your trials and your triumphs nurture an even grander, richer and radiant you to emerge.

Surrender to the season, nestle in the arms of winter; go inwards and nourish your soul, mother your dreams and create your vision for the next season of YOU.

"Your real strength comes from being the best "YOU" you can be."  - Po, the Dragon Warrior [Kung Fu Panda 3]

Like Master Oogway and Shifu were to Po, I would love to be your mentor.   On my life journey I have discovered that as I mentor others, I am mentored by them.  It's a beautiful mutually beneficial relationship.

My offer of mentorship is in the form of a  call to action  to unbundle your true self from the limiting beliefs and stories that hold the true you back and surrender to becoming the highest expression of yourself.

Discovering the trauma informed professional that lies within your heart is a journey of self-discovery and growth moving continuously towards excellence, excellence in service to self and others.

By diving deep into reflection, the 8 attributes of a trauma informed professional chart a course for you to discover your deepest wisdom and affirm your deepest knowings.

The journey to become a trauma informed professional, however, is not for the faint of heart. You may encounter lessons that shake your sense of control and challenge your ideas of the status quo.

What our current cohort has shared with the faculty and I is that unlike standard certifications, this program takes you deep below the surface, inviting you to re-examine and reaffirm the best 'YOU' you choose to be both personally and professionally.

With the holidays upon us, wrapping up one of the most challenging years in recent history might just be the perfect time to invest in yourself and begin 2021 with a new perspective; a new vision for a YOU who chooses to show up and be that trauma informed leader for change creating a kinder, more connected and compassionate world for all.

As 2020 winds down it also marks the end and beginning of a new cycle, astrologically speaking, that foretells of great momentous change and social restructuring (much of which we have already begun to experience).  December is our time to weave a new reality for ourselves, for those we serve, and for the world at large!

Accept this invitation to weave a new reality for yourself as a Trauma Informed Professional.

The other day a bird flew into my daughters house. Her first reaction was to scream! Rapid fire thoughts started racing through her head - what the heck is a bird doing in the house? How am I going to get it out? It better not get near my babies! As she tried to shoo the bird towards the window to get it to leave, she turned to her 5-year old and asked if he was scared and he screamed back at her "I wasn't scared until you started screaming".

Have you ever watched the movie Wreck It Ralph? It's an animated movie where Ralph gets fed up being the 'bad guy', losing to 'good-guy' Fix-it Felix and heads off on a quest to prove he has what it takes to be a hero. Felix is a handyman with a magical hammer and anything he touches with his hammer is miraculously repaired. You may be wondering why I am writing about a kids movie. Well, it's because fixing things feels so rewarding, right? I absolutely LOVE the dopamine rush I get when I can fix something for somebody, especially when that something is for someone who seems especially vulnerable (although oftentimes, that's not necessarily a requirement).

Pronouns matter because they are a fundamental aspect of language and communication. Pronouns reflect not just grammatical structure but also social and cultural values. Their significance goes much deeper than mere linguistic convenience. They hold the power to affirm identity and foster inclusivity. Pronouns validate our sense of self while creating a sense of belonging and acceptance.
