Quantum Caring at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital

NHS Grampian’s Maternity Hospital in Aberdeen and Dr. Gray’s Community Hospital in Elgin Scotland are partnering with Caring Essentials Collaborative to adopt trauma-informed practices with a focus on the core measure for pain and stress. This core measure includes best practices in pain and stress prevention, assessment and management and the role of the family in comforting and supporting their infant in the hospital.

This “Quantum Caring” Program will span 6 months time during which the team has completed a staff perception assessment survey regarding trauma-informed practices in the NICU and an onsite practice audit to corroborate staff perceptions. The interdisciplinary staff attended a 4-hour interactive education session presenting the science behind the relevance of a trauma-informed paradigm. Staff champions have drafted their tests for change and are currently working through the model for improvement coached and mentored by Mary Coughlin, the global expert in trauma-informed neonatal care.

Ms. Coughlin provides ongoing coaching and mentoring virtually until she returns onsite again in June to assess, audit and support the teams ongoing work to become a center of excellence in neonatal care. The project wraps up in September when the team will celebrate success and identify their next practice improvement initiative!
